BETTER THAN LIFTING DUMB-BELLS! (AUTUMN 2025)

 

There are about 40,000 bellringers in the UK, and 40,000 people can't be wrong! With that many ringers, it's a great hobby socially too, they say.

No matter where you go in the UK, you're never far from a tower with bells and a band of ringers who will welcome you – with a visit to the pub afterwards!

When Salem resident Karen Scalia toured East Budleigh this year, one of the highlights was a visit to All Saints’ tower, kindly hosted by Bells Captain Alan Murdoch.

THREE CHEERS FOR UNTIDINESS! (AUTUMN 2025)

 ‘Wow!’ exclaimed our 12-year-old grand-daughter Lucy as she saw the shambles of more than 80 years of clutter hidden in our garage. She settled down to explore. We both agreed that every family home should have something similar—a museum of untidily stacked curios and unfamiliar objects to surprise and delight visitors, especially children. Lucy’s reaction reminded me of how, as a child, the sister of a well known composer described her feelings as she explored the ‘rambling and dilapidated’ property at 31 Station Road in Budleigh Salterton. FROM SALEM COMMON TO CONFLICT: THE FIRST MUSTER AND THE PEQUOT WAR PANEL AND DINNER (WINTER 2025)

Roger Conant and his fellow settlers at Naumkeag in the 1620s have been recorded as enjoying a harmonious relation ship with the indigenous people of the area.
