CELEBRATING PLASTIC-FREE BUDLEIGH SALTERTON (AUTUMN 2025)

Budleigh Salterton was recently awarded Plastic Free Community Status, a national accreditation given out by Surfers Against Sewage — the marine conservation charity.

To achieve this, communities must engage their local council, get businesses to remove at least three single-use items, work with community groups and schools, hold events, and establish a steering group. This status is not a "plastic-free" guarantee but a recognition of the community's commit-ment and progress in tackling plastic pollution.

The Budleigh campaign was launched a year ago by Sue Glover, environment lead for Budleigh Lions. Its aim is to cut down on plastic litter in the town as well as removing it from the beach and in the surrounding countryside, making the environment safer for people, pets and wildlife.
