VILLAGE’S 2026 PEACEMAKER FESTIVAL (AUTUMN 2025)

All Saints’ Church, part of the Raleigh Mission Community in East Devon will be holding a Peacemaker Festival on 16/17 May 2026 in honour of ‘local lad’ Roger Conant, born in East Budleigh in 1592, and the 400th anniversary of his founding of Salem in 1626.

The Festival will run over the weekend. A formal peace-themed music concert will take place on the Saturday evening. It will include an address by the Bishop of Exeter, the Reverend Dr Mike Harrison, pictured here.


‘The Peacemaker Festival concert on the Saturday will be a ticketed fundraising event for All Saints, open to the public. It will be preceded by a drinks reception so the Bishop can meet everyone,’ explained local resident Maria Malinowska.

‘On the Sunday, a village music concert will take place with local musicians, followed by a simple buffet hosted by All Saints. It is hoped to record Bishop Mike’s message so it can be sent to Salem in time for their 400th anniversary celebrations in June 2026.’

THREE CHEERS FOR UNTIDINESS! (AUTUMN 2025)

 ‘Wow!’ exclaimed our 12-year-old grand-daughter Lucy as she saw the shambles of more than 80 years of clutter hidden in our garage. She settled down to explore. We both agreed that every family home should have something similar—a museum of untidily stacked curios and unfamiliar objects to surprise and delight visitors, especially children. Lucy’s reaction reminded me of how, as a child, the sister of a well known composer described her feelings as she explored the ‘rambling and dilapidated’ property at 31 Station Road in Budleigh Salterton. Roger Conant and his fellow settlers at Naumkeag in the 1620s have been recorded as enjoying a harmonious relation ship with the indigenous people of the area.
