A massive cleanup of derelict fishing gear in U.S. coastal waters is set to begin, benefiting from awards totaling more than $1.4M by the Nationwide Fishing Trap Removal, Assessment, and Prevention (TRAP) Program.
Last November it was announced that the City of Beverly would receive over $124k for SCUBA-based removal by the Harbormaster's Dept and partners.
The TRAP program supports projects removing lost or abandoned fishing gear such as traps and pots that kill marine life and harm habitats through the phenomenon known as ‘ghost fishing’, where derelict fishing gear continues to trap fish. Beverly Harbor suffers particularly from derelict lobster pots.
According to www.ghostdiving.org it is estimated that 640,000 tons of fishing gear gets lost or abandoned in the seas and oceans each year. Such material is among the greatest killers in the oceans and due to its nature will keep ‘fishing’ for multiple decades, possibly even for several centuries.
